Of course, more transparency is needed among hospices. And more work on identifying reliable measures of quality. But the subscale size of hospices remains the greatest hurdle to improving hospice care. After all, it's difficult for a hospice to develop proficiency when admitting to its care fewer than 3 patients per week, as do nearly half of the nation's hospices.
